The Energy Division of the Ministry of Industry, Technology, Energy and Commerce has portfolio responsibility for the Rural Electrification Programme.

An average of 63.4% of Jamaicans live in dwellings with electricity. However, this coverage ranges from 29.4% for the poorest one-fifth of the population of 2.5 million to a high of 86.8% for the wealthiest one-fifth. The Government's Rural Electrification Programme seeks to make electricity accessible to the very remote and rural areas in Jamaica.

A number of initiatives have been proposed/undertaken to upgrade the supply of electricity to rural areas and to increase overall operating efficiency. The Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPSCo) provides 60% of all the electricity consumed on the Island. Private companies generate the remaining electricity supply.
