The Ministry’s Agency, the Central Information Technology Office (CITO) was established to facilitate the promotion, development and growth of the information technology sector. This involves the co-ordination of information technology (IT) activities carried out by public and private sector entities, academic institutions, trade associations, non-Government organisations (NGOs), the public in general, as well as Jamaicans overseas. The role of CITO is to:
  • provide policy and technical advice on local and international issues impacting on the development of the information technology industry in Jamaica.
  • ensure common linkages between sectors and between Ministries, i.e. maintaining cost-effectiveness and maximizing structural and operational efficiencies;
  • communicate the vision for IT in Jamaica, while coordinating the IT-related sectoral plans of each Ministry.
  • collaborate with other stakeholders in supporting the modernization and development of the local IT sector.

The Technology Division of the Ministry of Industry, Technology, Energy and Commerce has responsibility for the technology portfolio. The Ministry also collaborates with the Scientific Research Council and the National Commission on Science and Technology on science and technology matters that are of national interest.
